Camden County Prosecutor Warren W. Faulk reported Thursday the chief of the Berlin Township Police Department has been charged with harassing a civilian female employee in the department.

Joe Jackson, M/45, of West Berlin, Chief since 2009, was charged Thursday with two counts of Harassment and Simple Assault. These are disorderly persons offenses and are not indictable.

Jackson has been suspended since allegations were brought against him in September.

It is alleged that on July 16, 2012, Jackson hugged the female employee and lifted her off the ground, causing discomfort and annoyance. This incident capped interactions with the employee from April 2010 to July 2012 that included touching, rubbing and hugs that continued even after she indicated this behavior made her uncomfortable.

All persons charged with criminal offenses are presumed innocent until found guilty in a court of law.
