Camden County Prosecutor Warren W. Faulk and Camden County Police Chief Scott Thomson reported a city man was arrested in Lawrence, Mass., Monday in connection with an April homicide in Camden.

Members of the U.S. Marshals New York/New Jersey Fugitive Task Force tracked Jonathan Cruz, M/23, of Camden, to Lawrence and took him into custody there, He had been staying with a relative in Massachusetts. Cruz had been sought by the Marshals since May 24, when a warrant was issued for his arrest on a charge of Murder.

Cruz is accused of killing Ernesto Torres, M/24, of Camden, on April 3, 2014, on the 2700 block of Lincoln Avenue in Camden. It is alleged Cruz confronted Torres on Wayne Avenue after a series of ongoing disputes between the defendant and victim. Cruz is alleged to have drawn a gun on Torres and fired at him as the victim fled toward Lincoln Avenue. Torres was struck multiple times.

The prosecutor’s office is taking steps to transfer him back to New Jersey.

All persons charged with criminal offenses are innocent unless and until convicted in a court of law.
