Camden County Prosecutor Warren W. Faulk and Lawnside Public Safety Director reported a device found in an elevator of the borough municipal building appears to be a real explosive.
The device, a pair of flares taped to two pipes, was found in the municipal building elevator by a court clerk about 8 a.m. on March 7. The device was in a bag with the name of Mayor Mary Ann Wardlow written on it.
Authorities were notified immediately and the building was cleared. The device was destroyed by the Camden County Bomb Squad about 11 a.m.
Subsequent investigation revealed the device did not contain explosives and was instead filled with screws. It would not have been possible to detonate the device.
Wardlow left the building about 8:30 p.m. Wednesday night and the device was not in the elevator at that time.
