Camden, N.J. – Acting Camden County Prosecutor Jill S. Mayer is proud to announce the hiring of the office’s newest detective.

Kevin S. Smith was hired in March 2021 as a Detective.  He is currently assigned to the Grand Jury Unit. Smith earned an Associate Degree in Criminology from Camden County College in 2012 before joining the Camden County Police Department in 2013. Throughout his six years with the department, Smith worked as both a patrol officer and crime scene investigator. During that time, Smith was responsible for collecting DNA evidence, dusting for fingerprints, securing crime scenes, photographing scenes, interviewing witnesses, and other investigative duties. In 2014, Smith was honored with the Camden County Police Meritorious Service Award for his work as a patrol officer. Smith is certified through the Camden County College Police Academy from which he graduated in 2013. He has also trained in concealed compartments with the Drug Enforcement Administration and in crime scene investigations with the Federal Bureau of Investigations.

“We’re excited to have Kevin bring his wealth of experience working in Camden to Prosecutor’s Office,” said Mayer. “He has a history of taking initiative in attending trainings and a drive for learning new techniques that will serve him well as a detective. With his unique skillset, we know he will be a strong addition to the office and look forward to seeing him excel here.”

As part of the Grand Jury Unit, Smith will work on cases from the 37 municipalities in the county. He will be responsible for ensuring that all evidence, interviews, witnesses, and necessary documentation is collected for presentation to a Grand Jury.  He will also work to conduct any necessary follow up investigation.
