Camden County Prosecutor Mary Eva Colalillo and Camden County Police Chief Scott Thomson report a Grand Jury has returned an indictment for Pedro Mercado in the homicide of his mother on April 1 in Camden.

Pedro Mercado, 22, was indicted on first-degree murder in the killing of 38-year-old Iris Sanchez of Camden.

He was also indicted on second-degree counts of possession of a weapon for unlawful purpose, unlawful possession of a weapon and certain persons and on fourth-degree aggravated assault.

Mercado is accused of killing Sanchez around 5:36 p.m. on April 1, 2016. Camden County Police responded to the 1100 block of N. 18th Street in Camden in reference to a 911 call of a female shot. Officers arrived and located the victim inside a house suffering from a gunshot wound. She was transported to Cooper University Hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced deceased at approximately 7:25 p.m.

The investigation revealed the shooter was Mercado. He was arrested by Camden County Sheriff officers approximately 8 p.m. near the intersection of Haddon and Benson streets.

All persons charged with criminal offenses are presumed innocent until found guilty in a court of law.
