Camden County Prosecutor Mary Eva Colalillo and Camden County Police Chief Scott Thomson reported a man has been charged in connection with a crash that killed a pedestrian in Camden.
Neri Garcia, M/74, of Camden, was charged Wednesday with first-degree Death by Auto.
Garcia is accused of fatally striking Benjamin Cortes-Ramos, M/53, of Camden, with his 2000 Ford Explorer at Westfield and Rosedale avenues in Camden as the victim was crossing Westfield Avenue around 8:30 p.m. October 4, 2014. Cortes-Ramos was taken to Cooper University Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 9:07 p.m.
A witness to the crash observed Garcia get out of his vehicle, take several steps on wobbly legs and fall to the ground. The witness took Garcia’s keys and turned them over to an officer when police arrived.
Police noticed Garcia was exhibiting signs of intoxication and found two open containers of alcohol in his vehicle. Toxicology testing showed Garcia’s blood-alcohol content was 0.21 percent.
Garcia surrendered at Camden County Police headquarters Wednesday after authorities notified his attorney that he was being charged. He was remanded to the Camden County Jail with bail set $150,000 at cash or bond. He was later released after posting bail.
All persons charged with criminal offenses are presumed innocent until found guilty in a court of law.
