Camden County Prosecutor Warren W. Faulk and Camden County Police Chief Scott Thomson reported an arrest in a Camden assault that became a homicide last week.

Rasheem Kelly, M/32, of Camden, was charged with Murder Saturday in connection with the beating of a 45-year-old Camden man who subsequently died as a result of his injuries. Kelly is scheduled to be arraigned 1:30 p.m. Wednesday in Courtroom 36 in Camden County Superior Court.

Kelly is accused of beating Santiago on January 19, 2014 on the 2100 block of Sewell Street. Witnesses provided information that Kelly struck Santiago with an object as the victim lay on the ground. Kelly is accused of then picking up Santiago and body slamming him into the street. Santiago’s head hit the curb and he was knocked unconscious. Santiago was still unconscious when police arrived.

Santiago was treated at Cooper Hospital in Camden and was then transferred to Capital Health Systems in Trenton, where he died January 29. An autopsy conducted the next day determined blunt force trauma to the head and neck caused Santiago’s death.

All persons charged with criminal offenses are innocent unless and until convicted in a court of law.
