Camden County Prosecutor Warren Faulk and Camden Police Chief Scott Thomson reported charges Tuesday in connection with a summer 2012 sexual assault of a young child in the city.
Osvaldo Rivera, M/32, of Camden, is charged with 1st degree Aggravated Sexual Assault and 3rd degree Endangering the Welfare of a Child in connection with the August 13, 2012, assault of a male child under the age of 13.
It is alleged Rivera sexually assaulted the child in his home. It is unclear whether Rivera broke into the home or was staying there, though he does know the victim’s family.
Investigators struggled to identify a suspect in the child’s assault until a tragedy less than a month later turned the course of the case. On September 2, 2012, Dominick Andujar, M/6, was found dead with his throat slit. His 12-year-old sister had suffered stab wounds and survived. Rivera was charged with Murder and Attempted Murder for the attack on the two children.
Investigators working on the August 13 assault noted Andujar’s murder occurred in the same neighborhood where their victim was assaulted, and there were similarities in the attacks. DNA evidence confirmed Rivera’s link to both incidents.
All persons charged with criminal offenses are presumed innocent until found guilty in a court of law.
